For McCain, sustainability is a global priority. Except in the Global South.
McCain claims caring for the planet is a global priority. In the rest of the world, the company already uses 100% cage-free eggs. But the Global South has not received the same priority. McCain postponed the deadline for its Brazilian brand, Forno de Minas, to 2030.
In the meantime, thousands of hens remain confined in spaces smaller than a sheet of A4 paper.
769 McCain employees have already supported our campaign, calling for transparency and action.
We are calling on international support. Let’s urge McCain’s leadership to apply the same standard across all markets, including the Global South.
Why do we need to end cage confinement?

Lack of space
A small cage can hold up to 12 hens. Generally, each hen has less space than a sheet of A4 paper for her entire life.

Frustration
Hens in cages cannot express their natural behaviours, such as fully spreading their wings, walking or building nests. This severe restriction can lead to high levels of frustration, negatively affecting their welfare.

Pain
Intensive confinement severely restricts natural movement, including the simple act of walking. Because they cannot exercise, hens develop fragile bones, making them highly prone to osteoporosis and painful fractures.

Death
Sometimes, dead hens are left to decompose for days, forcing surviving birds to live with decomposing bodies at their feet.

Public health
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that cage systems have a higher prevalence of Salmonella compared with cage-free systems.

Suffering
A rigorous scientific analysis showed that transitioning to cage-free systems can prevent more than 7,000 hours of pain and suffering for each laying hen raised in aviaries rather than conventional cages.

Five seconds of your time can make a huge difference for animals

McCain says that caring for the planet and business ethics are global priorities. Yet it postponed its public animal welfare commitment in Brazil by another five years.
McCain, show that your brand values are real—not just marketing talk. We demand that you:
-
Fulfil Forno de Minas’s cage-free egg policy.
-
Publish a clear and transparent action plan.
Every day without action is a missed opportunity. Animals should not wait any longer.
It’s time to act!

About McCain
McCain is a Canadian holding company that says its purpose is to “celebrate true connections through delicious, planet-friendly food”.
According to its founders, McCain was built on a conviction: “good ethics is good business”. Yet postponing its animal welfare policy across the board tells a different story in Brazil.
